PHONE SCAMMERS TARGET DURHAM COUNTY RESIDENTS

Sheriff's Office Encourages Scam Victims to #JustHangUp

Durham, N.C. -

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office continues to urge residents to hang up on phone scammers.  The Agency is spreading the word on social media with the hashtag #justhangup. This week some residents received bogus phone calls from scammers claiming to work for the Sheriff's Office. The caller identifies themselves as a deputy and tells the resident to call the Civil Division of the Sheriff's Office about pending paperwork.

Because phone scammers often resurface under different names and phone numbers, Durham County residents should always  follow these simple steps if they receive a suspicious phone call seeking personal or financial information.

WHAT TO DO IF A PHONE SCAMMER CALLS YOU:

  • Make note of the caller's phone number.
  • Avoid conversation and hang up.
  • Contact the law enforcement agency in your jurisdiction.
  • Consider blocking the scammer's phone number to avoid future calls.

Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest should contact the Durham County Sheriff's Office at (919) 560-0900. The public can also submit anonymous tips at crimetip@durhamsheriff.org.
