Additional Demonstrators Expected to Surrender

Durham, N.C. – This morning between 100 to 120 people participated in a demonstration at the Durham County courthouse and the Durham County Detention Facility without incident.  Durham County Sheriff’s uniformed and non-uniformed deputies monitored the rally to ensure there were no disruptions to the daily operation of the courthouse and the detention facility.

Before the rally, the Sheriff’s Office made clear its support of the right to peaceable assembly as well as its expectation that protesters obtain a city permit and conduct themselves in such a manner that complies with the law.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office collaborated with Durham County Emergency Management to maintain the safety and security of the courthouse and detention facility. During the courthouse demonstration, the Fire Marshal of Durham County determined the crowd posed a security risk in the hallway outside of a courtroom that was near full capacity. For this reason, deputies restricted entry into the courtroom to reserve space for defendants on the court docket and employees conducting business in the courthouse.

Deputies did not arrest rally participants who approached them claiming responsibility for the destruction of a historical statute.  Three people whom the Sheriff’s Office had previously obtained arrest warrants for in connection with the destruction of government property were taken into custody. Their names and charges are listed below.  Mug shots are also provided below.

Raul Mauro Arce Jimenez (DOB 7/30/1991)
Elena Everett (DOB 8/3/1980)

The Sheriff’s Office has arrested seven people in connection with the destruction of a statue. The Sheriff's Office is aware of at least one other person expected to surrender today. The Sheriff’s Office consulted with the Durham County District Attorney’s Office on two occasions before obtaining arrest warrants for all seven suspects. Additional arrests are expected.
