Social Services App Wins Brilliant Ideas At Work Award

Post Date:08/30/2017

Durham, NC —The Durham County Department of Social Services won an award from the National Association of Counties (NACo), for the creation of the mobile application. The 100 Brilliant Ideas at Work Award was created to illustrate the best innovations in county government. Durham County is the first in the state of North Carolina, among social services agencies, to introduce a mobile app for its clients.

“We are very thankful for this prestigious NACo award for the DSS Mobile App. This concept came about as a result of DSS’ desire to leverage technology to enhance service delivery.  Partnering with our Information Services & Technology (IS&T) department we were able to bring this concept to life. This was a great team effort,” states Interim Director of DSS, Catherine Williamson-Hardy. “Other counties are very interested in developing their own Mobile App and the IS&T department has provided the programming code to those counties.  We look forward to seeing our technology and creativity have an impact across the state.”

The “Social Services Mobile App or DSS Mobile App,” was created to allow electronic submission of forms and paperwork for the application and recertification benefit process. These electronic application forms are for Food and Nutrition Services, Medicaid, Work First benefits, and for emergency financial relief. The documentation is received directly by the clients’ case workers and is a seamless integration with their current workflow process.

“We are very happy to receive this Achievement Award from NACo in recognition for our development of the Social Services Mobile Application aimed at improving residents’ quality of life. This is an example of technology innovation and creativity at its best and we’re very happy to have had the opportunity to partner with our Social Services organization in furthering our Smart County initiatives,” said Greg Marrow, chief information officer for Durham County Government IS&T.
