Durham, NC - On October 6 and 7, Durham County Commissioner Brenda Howerton attended the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners’ (NCACC) Board of the Directors meeting in Dare County.  NCACC Board meetings are held several times throughout year to provide an opportunity for the Board of Directors and its Executive Committee to discuss policy decisions and how best to direct the work of the Association and its staff.

As NCACC President, Commissioner Howerton presided over the meeting, which kicked off with reports from NCACC executive officers and other Board members. The agenda included an orientation for all Board members as it was the first meeting of the 2017-18 presidential year. There was also a presentation on President Howerton’s initiative, “100 Counties: Helping Our Children Thrive,” which will address how counties can best serve youth ages 0-18. The initiative’s Task Force will be co-chaired by Wilkes County Commissioner Gary Blevins and Beaufort County Commissioner Ed Booth, and hold its first meeting in Durham County October 18th.

Board members also elected Forsyth County Commissioner Gloria Whisenhunt to serve on the National Association of Counties (NACo) Board of Directors, a national advocacy and leadership organization representing the common interests of 3,069 county governments throughout the country.  Commissioner Whisenhunt has 21 years of experience in county public service, and has served in leadership roles for various community organizations, Forsyth County, and NCACC.  She is also a member of NACo’s Healthy Counties Initiative Advisory Board.

The Board meeting included updates on the Association’s activities in the areas of finance, risk management, legal, government relations and membership services, and action by the Board to approve its audit report for the 2016-17 fiscal year.
