Durham County Launches Collaboration with Aetna to Support My Brother’s Keeper Initiative
Aetna’s $50,000 Investment in My Brother’s Keeper Durham Will Support a Network Devoted to Educational and Career Exposure for Young Men of Color
DURHAM, N.C. – In an effort to strengthen the network of services and support for young men of color in Durham, Aetna has made a $50,000 investment contribution to My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Durham.
The investment comes at a critically important time for MBK Durham, as officials have been working on an intensive community needs assessment, evaluating the effectiveness of current programming to better understand what programs are working and what programs may need additional support. MBK Durham is identifying and leveraging existing partners who are “on-the-ground” providing knowledge and expertise in various fields.
Program Manager for My Brother’s Keeper Durham Edmund P. Lewis, Jr. speaking about the investment, said that “young black men face a unique challenge that oftentimes prevents many of them from discovering their truest potential.” Lewis went on to say that “to ensure we equal the playing field in all aspects of success, we must listen to our youth while continuing to break down these barriers and strengthening their network of opportunities.”
Wendell Davis, Durham County Manager, said that “we are excited to be working with Aetna and their representative Landis Rush to better serve our young men of color with additional opportunities and networks to strengthen their pathways to success. While we are aware of the various challenges that exist, we believe that there is a great opportunity to strengthen this network to develop a policy driven agenda that fits the particular milestones we aim to achieve here in Durham.”
As part of Aetna’s community engagement efforts, the company’s investment will further enhance the goals of MBK Durham’s Pathways to Success by supporting efforts to increase college and career opportunities, while simultaneously promoting the procurement of future partnerships.
Aetna’s Market President in North Carolina Jim Bostian voiced his endorsement by saying “Aetna is honored to respond to this important ‘call to action’ in our local community with our support of MBK Durham. This furthers our commitment to building a healthier world – one person, one family and one community at a time.”
Landis Rush, National VP for State and Local Government and Public Sector and Labor at Aetna, echoed the overall sentiments by highlighting the fact that “when we invest in MBK Durham, we are investing in a brighter future for all Durham residents. These young leaders are assets to our communities, and when provided with guidance, counsel and support, they will exceed expectations.”
The media is invited to the official public-private partnership announcement for MBK Durham and Aetna at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at WG Pearson Magnet Middle School, located at 600 E. Umstead Street. In addition to the announcement, a special presentation will take place regarding MBK Durham.
