County Chief Financial Officer George Quick to Retire

Post Date:11/30/2017

Durham, NC Durham County’s Chief Financial Officer George K. Quick will retire effective January 1, 2018. His planned retirement comes after serving Durham County Government for more than 16 years and working many years in the banking and finance industry.

When asked about his years guiding the financial planning and analysis of Durham County Government, Quick said “Durham County allowed me to develop as a manager and gave me the freedom and support to try new processes that resulted in it becoming one of the most financially sound counties in the United States. "

While at Durham County Government, Quick’s fiscal acumen, expertise and leadership has played a significant role in the growth of the organization’s fiscal strength and solvency through bolstered fund balance reserves, improvements upon existing financial policies and progressive approaches for debt management. Most notably, he facilitated the use of short-term financing to fund capital projects before issuing long-term debt, with the first project saving taxpayers more than $15 million dollars in interest. Before his tenure, this financing approach was not an available option for North Carolina’s local governments. He also introduced the County to an interest rate swap in 2005 that has generated over $27 million dollars to date to support debt service payments. Finally, during Quick’s tenure, the County has maintained its Triple A bond rating designation with Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s.

“George has been a great steward of Durham County’s fiscal operations during his tenure,” said County Manager Wendell Davis. “His leadership has been exceptional and his work has set a high bar for our continued growth as an organization.”

Described as a seasoned and thoughtful manager, Quick’s ability to sharpen Durham County’s financial strength was lauded by Triangle Business Journal in 2012 when he was named CFO of the Year in the government category. He was celebrated for implementing new ways to finance capital projects and his integral role in Durham County’s local and regional recognition.
