County to Recognize the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

Durham, NC – Durham County Government will observe the Martin Luther King Jr., holiday on Monday, January 15, 2018. On this day, non-essential offices for the County will be closed. All County offices will reopen and resume normal hours of operation on Tuesday, January 16th

 

Durham County General Services

County Convenience Sites

The Durham County General Services Department will close its four Solid Waste and Recycling Convenience Sites on January 15th. Durham County residents with a current 2017-2018 solid waste decal can resume disposal of garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky items on January 16th beginning at 7 a.m. 

 

Roadside Recycling Collection

The Durham County roadside recycling collection (Schedule A – North of the Eno River) for the week of January 15th will not change due to the holiday. Customers scheduled for Monday’s collection will receive service on Monday as scheduled.

Durham County Department of Public Health

The Durham County Department of Public Health will follow the Durham County Government Martin Luther King Jr., holiday schedule.

 

For Public Health emergencies during the holiday closure, including communicable disease reporting, environmental health and suspected foodborne illnesses, please call 911 and ask for the Durham County Department of Public Health’s response team member on-call.

Durham County Library

Durham County Library will also be closed on January 15th, for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The Main Library downtown will now be closed for a complete transformation, but all other locations will reopen on January 16th with regular hours.

Durham County Social Services

Durham County’s Department of Social Services (DSS) will follow the Durham County Government holiday closing schedule. DSS will close their offices in the Human Services Building on East Main Street, as well as, the DSS Child Care Subsidy Office, located at 1201 Briggs Avenue, Suite 101, on January 15th. Offices will reopen with normal hours of operation on January 16th.

 

While offices are closed on a holiday, residents should call 911 to report child and/or adult abuse and neglect. An on-call social worker will be notified.  For more information about Durham County’s Department of Social Services visit our website, www.dconc.gov/dss.

 

Durham County Sheriff

Durham County’s Sheriff Department’s patrol division, as always, is available 24/7. The Sheriff’s Administration and Records Division will be closed on January 15th and will reopen on January 16th.

Durham City-County Martin Luther King, Jr. Employee Observance Program

Durham City and County governments collaborate annually for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Employee Observance Program. The 13th Annual program is scheduled for noon on Thursday, January 11, 2018.

 

Organized each year in celebration of Dr. King’s legacy and progressive ideals, this year’s program will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main St., in downtown Durham. Free and open to the public, the event includes remarks from local leaders and elected officials, with musical selections by the Durham City-County MLK Employee Choir.
