Groves Graduates from FEMA’s National Emergency Management Executive Academy

Durham, NC Durham County Fire Marshal and City-County Emergency Management Director Jim Groves recently graduated from FEMA’s National Emergency Management Executive Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, after completing the full curriculum that supports the advancement of the emergency management profession at the strategic, policy, and executive leadership level.

 

Groves completed the four weeks of National Executive Academy resident courses on June 21, 2018. The rigorous curriculum included the following courses: Systems and Design Thinking for Executives, Leading Complex Systems in Emergency Management, Net Centric Visioning, Critical Thinking for Emergency Management, Applying Decision Making Models, Ethics in Emergency Management, Conflict Management, Interpreting the Contemporary Emergency Management Environment, Leadership and Collaboration for Emergency Management, Strategic Foresight Initiatives, Executive Leader Readiness, as well as completing a collaborative Capstone Project titled “FEMA’s Preliminary Damage Assessment Process: Gap Analysis on Intent, Current Practice and Recommendations for Business Process Optimization.”

 

Durham County General Manager for Community and Public Safety Jodi Miller praised Groves: “Jim’s commitment to and leadership of effective emergency management practices are evident by his completion of FEMA’s National Emergency Management Executive Academy,” she said. “Durham will be a safer and better prepared community due to his training and dedication.”

 

The National Executive Academy provides emergency management leaders with a deeper understanding of contemporary and emerging emergency management issues, debates, and public policy. It provides insights, theories, tools and resources that enable decision-makers to think and act more strategically and to build capacity to protect against, prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all types of disasters. It is designed for senior executives at the pinnacle of their careers and is the final phase of FEMA’s Emergency Management Professional Program (EMPP).
