Board of Elections Meets with Federal Officials Prior to Upcoming Election Cycle

Durham, NC – Like many jurisdictions across the nation, Durham County Board of the Elections is preparing for the 2018 General Election scheduled this November. In preparation for the election cycle, the County’s election team initiated a meeting with federal officials to discuss election security. Last month, the Board of Elections invited the United States Department of Homeland Security and North Carolina Department of Public Safety to begin laying the foundation for an assessment of Durham’s elections infrastructure. The initial visit, held in late August, involved a pre-assessment meeting with plans set for a full physical assessment prior to the upcoming general election.

 

“Our top priority is to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the vote in Durham County,” said Chairman of the Durham County Board of Elections Luke J. Farley, Jr. “Throughout each step of the voting process, we have procedures in place to safeguard against tampering or outside interference. We thank the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and the N.C. Dept. of Public Safety for sharing their expertise and look forward to working with them to improve our system."

 

The discussion between federal, state and local officials included representatives from the County’s Information Services and Technology Department as well. The information gathered in the meeting was imperative to understanding election security practices in Durham County. In addition to covering the physical and cyber security of Durham County’s elections infrastructure, resources available to election jurisdictions across the county to enhance security was discussed.  During the visit, Homeland Security and Public Safety received a full tour of the County Board of Elections facilities and secure areas.

 

According to Elections Director Derek Bowens, Durham County is a member of the Elections Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis Center (EI-ISAC), a Department of Homeland Security supported organization created to advise and assist elections offices in the United States on proper physical and cyber security practices for critical infrastructure. Elections offices in the United States benefit from the services in place which include monitoring, education, best practices and resources to protect the elections franchise and its members.
