MAN LEADS SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES ON 11-MILE PURSUIT
Durham, N.C., August 11, 2012—A Durham man is in custody after leading several Durham County sheriff’s deputies and a Highway Patrol trooper on an 11-mile car chase through sections of east and north Durham Friday night.
The chase began near the intersection of S Miami Boulevard and Pleasant Drive at 10:15 p.m. when a 2008 Honda Accord, driven by 32-year-old Maurice Lamont Powell, of 2901 Cannada Ave, crossed the center line and nearly collided with a sheriff’s patrol car being driven by Dep. V.S. Buchanan, according to Durham County Sheriff’s Office Maj. John Flamion.
Dep. Buchanan attempted to stop the vehicle for crossing the center line, but its driver refused to stop and began to flee southbound on S Miami Boulevard. The pursuit traveled through southeast Durham reaching speeds of 80 m.p.h., and finally stopped in the 600-block of Martin Street in northeast Durham when the driver “jumped and ran” from the vehicle.
Sheriff’s deputies chased Powell on foot for a short distance before capturing him. Powell resisted arrest and was eventually placed into custody with assistance from another deputy and a Highway Patrol trooper arrived to assist Dep. Buchanan.
Deputies Buchanan and M.R. Ruffin sustained minor injuries while attempting to arrest Powell. They were later treated at Durham Regional Hospital and released. Powell was not injured during the incident.
Powell, whose driver’s license is permanently suspended, is charged with Driving While License Revoked, Speeding, Felony Flee to Elude Arrest, Resisting a Public Officer, Possession of Marijuana, and Reckless Driving. He is being held in the Durham County Jail under a $75,500 bond. Powell is also being held on an outstanding order for arrest for Driving While License Revoked out of Duplin County.
