DURHAM, NC - Sixty seconds is all it takes.  On Tuesday, March 26, the Durham Diabetes Coalition and American Diabetes Association are partnering to encourage Durham residents to take one minute from their day to measure their risk for type 2 diabetes.

The Durham Diabetes Coalition and American Diabetes Association will be hosting an Alert Day event at the YMCA at American Tobacco, located at 410 Blackwell Street in Durham.  Activities will take place on the Tobacco Campus lawn from 10:00am to 4:00pm.  The event will feature free health screenings, American Diabetes Association risk tests, diabetes education, community resources, and prize giveaways.

American Diabetes Association Alert Day is a one-day "wake-up call" held annually on the fourth Tuesday in March.

Although Alert Day is a one-day event, diabetes awareness and knowing your risk does not have to be.

“We really want to increase the public’s awareness of type 2 diabetes,” said Justin Thomas, Mission Delivery and Community Outreach Manager with the American Diabetes Association. “On Alert Day, we’re asking the public to answer a few simple questions about their risk factors for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a serious disease, but if caught early, you can prevent or decrease the chance of developing complications.”

Durham Diabetes Coalition partners including CAARE Inc., El Centro Hispano, and the Lincoln Community Health Center will also offer Alert Day health screenings, risk tests, and diabetes education at various community sites in Durham.

In the weeks leading up to Alert Day, the Durham Diabetes Coalition will host free diabetes education sessions and a Zumba class throughout the community.

The diabetes risk test is available at the American Diabetes Association website, www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/prevention/diabetes-risk-test/.
