Welcome Baby Program Reports Coat and Diaper Drive Success

Drive Collects Nearly 200 Coats and 6,000 Diapers

Durham, N.C. – Durham County Cooperative Extension’s Welcome Baby Resource Center reached out to the community recently requesting support to replenish its shrinking collection of coats and diapers for Durham families in need. Hosting its first-ever Coat and Diaper Drive with drop-off locations at the Durham County Library, the Department of Public Health, Cooperative Extension, and the Self Help Credit Union, from December through January, the drive netted 198 coats and 6,017 diapers for distribution to families visiting its Giving Closet.

According to Melva Henry, program coordinator for the Welcome Baby Program, the Giving Closet provides clothing and supplies to families of young children from birth to age five and finds that it runs low on supplies during the Winter months each year. “We plan to make the Coat and Diaper Drive an annual event. The coats and diapers we receive each year will continue to go directly to families in greatest need.”

The Welcome Baby Program relies heavily on community donations to support thousands of families in Durham. The Program reveals that donors were essential to the overall success of their recent Coat and Diaper Drive answering the need of the community’s youngest and most vulnerable. “We were sincerely grateful for the overwhelming response and outstanding level of support we received from the Durham community.”

About the 2012-2013 Coat and Diaper Drive
After the economy’s downturn, Welcome Baby experienced a decrease in donations for the Giving Closet and other programs. The Coat and Diaper drive was created to gather needed items and heighten the awareness of the needs of families with young children.
