County to Install Temporary Construction Fencing Outside of Administration Building

Post Date:03/08/2018

Durham, N.C. – Frequent visitors to downtown Durham may notice the rapid changes happening to the Judicial Building on Main Street. As work continues to progress on the renovation to the former courthouse, anyone walking in the area should note the next phase in the project that will include an external site project outside the Durham County Administration Building, located at 200 E. Main Street. The work scheduled to begin in the next week calls for construction safety fencing to be installed to ensure that pedestrians can safely enter and exit the admin building. Fencing installation will being on Friday, March 9, 2018.

The project set to begin soon includes improvements to the streetscape and landscape in front of the County’s Administration Building. The work will include the placement of wayfinding and signage that will improve access to the building and viewing of various monuments. According to the project lead, Durham County Engineering and Environmental Services the wayfinding signs will indicate the name of the building, governmental departments housed in the facility, and feature the Durham County logo.  The work to be done around the monuments will create more pedestrian friendly access to the historic sites.

To accommodate the fencing installation, services inside of the County Administration Building will not be interrupted. Once the fencing is in place, pedestrians will not be able to access the landscaped areas around the monuments.  The sidewalk and plaza entry into the building will remain accessible. Pedestrians should note that Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) access to the building will remain open via the side entrance to the facility.

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of June 2018. The construction fencing will be removed once the project is complete.
