Double Bucks Program Now Doubles Cash at Durham Farmers’ Markets
SNAP benefit recipients, WIC clients, and residents of select Durham Housing Authority sites can double cash purchases up to $10.00 for healthy foods
DURHAM, N.C. – If you are a SNAP benefit recipient with no money left on your card, you will be eligible to double your cash while purchasing healthy foods at the Durham Farmers’ Markets.
“Just in time for National Farmers Markets Week [August 5-11] we encourage everyone to take advantage of our farmers markets and shop local. Durham is the first market in North Carolina to double cash for low income shoppers. We are excited to add this feature to the Double Bucks program,” said Kelly Warnock, nutrition program manager, Durham County Department of Public Health. “Ever since its inception in 2014, the Double Bucks program has contributed over $55,000 to the local economy. Now that the market doubles cash, we are confident that the program will serve a larger population as well as create healthier lifestyles for the future of Durham County.”
The Double Bucks program doubles purchases up to $10.00 (to receive up to $20.00 at the market). Bread, fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and plant starts may be purchased with SNAP benefits.
The Durham Farmers’ Market is located at 501 Foster Street and is open Wednesdays from 3PM-6PM and Saturdays 8AM-NOON (seasonal hours).
