Durham Residents Affected by Hurricane Florence May Apply for SBA Assistance, FEMA Individual Assistance
Durham, N.C. – While not in the original list of Hurricane Florence impacted counties, both the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have expanded to Durham County and affected residents may now apply for SBA Disaster Assistance and FEMA Individual Assistance (IA). The deadline to apply for both has been extended until December 13, 2018.
To apply for SBA Disaster Assistance, go online to the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via the SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/. Loans are available to affected homeowners and renters to replace damaged real estate, personal property and automobiles. Businesses and nonprofits with disaster damaged property, equipment and more are also eligible to apply.
The FEMA Individual Assistance allows individuals and businesses to apply for disaster assistance for uninsured and underinsured damage and losses resulting from Hurricane Florence. Impacted residents who have a homeowner or flood insurance policy should file an insurance claim before applying for disaster assistance.
To be considered for all forms of disaster assistance, applicants should register online at https://www.disasterassistance.gov/ or download the FEMA mobile app. If online or mobile access is unavailable, applicants should call the FEMA toll-free helpline at (800) 621-3362. Affected residents who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services, offering telecommunications support, should call (800) 621-3362.
If residents registered with FEMA for Hurricane Florence damages prior to this new designation and received a rejection or were classified as not eligible, they do not need to re-register. The information is automatically updated in the system.
FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams will begin going door-to-door on Thursday, November 1, 2018, to households and businesses that were reported as impacted by Florence. FEMA representatives will all be wearing a FEMA shirt, have FEMA identification, and will be using FEMA iPads to input all information.

Durham County DSS to Offer Food Nutrition Services Assistance
Durham County Department of Social Services has been approved from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to implement emergency Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) assistance for Hurricane Florence. These disaster FNS benefits are for those declared Disaster County residents who do not currently receive benefits.
Applications for the emergency Food and Nutrition benefits, also known as D-SNAP will be taken at the Human Services Building, located at 414 East Main Street in downtown Durham, Thursday, November 1, 2018 through November 9, 2018, with the exception of, Election Day, November 6th. The time that applications will be received will be from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday, November 3rd and 4th, the time will be 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
