County Announces Winter Holiday Schedule

Durham, NC – Durham County Government will close most offices on December 24-26, 2018, in observance of the Winter Holiday. All offices will reopen on Thursday, December 27. Most offices will also close again on Tuesday, January 1, 2019, in recognition of the New Year’s Day holiday. All offices will reopen on Wednesday, January 2.

Durham County Convenience Centers

The Durham County General Services Department will close all four of its solid waste and recycling convenience sites on Saturday, December 22 at 1 p.m. through Tuesday, December 25. All sites will reopen on Wednesday, December 26 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. before returning to normal business hours of 7 a.m.-6 p.m. on December 27.


The convenience sites will also close on Tuesday, January 1, 2019, and reopen on Wednesday, January 2 at 7 a.m.


Durham County’s roadside recycling service scheduled for Monday, December 24 will not be impacted. Residents whose regular date is Tuesday, December 25 will have their solid waste picked up on December 26. The rest of the week will not be impacted.


Pickups normally on Tuesday, January 1, will be picked up on January 2, with the rest of the week’s schedule as normal.


All residents are reminded to set out their recycling carts before 7 a.m. on the day of pick up to avoid a missed collection.


Live Christmas trees are accepted in the yard waste containers at the Bahama, Redwood, and Parkwood Convenience Sites with a current 2018-2019 solid waste decal. All decorations must be removed prior to disposal. Citizens can take used cooking oil to all sites. Only liquid oils will be accepted for collection. Heavier fats, such as griddle grease and animal fat, will not be accepted.

Durham County Library

All locations of the Durham County Library will close on Monday, December 24 through Wednesday, December 26. Locations will reopen and resume normal hours on Thursday, December 27.


Durham County Library will also close on Monday, December 31 at 6 p.m. through Tuesday, January 1 for the New Year’s holiday. The library will reopen on Wednesday, January 2, with regular hours.

Durham County Public Health

The Durham County Department of Public Health will follow the Durham County Government Winter Holiday and New Year’s Day holiday closing schedule.


For Public Health emergencies during the holiday closure, including communicable disease reporting, environmental health and suspected foodborne illnesses, please call 911 and ask for the Durham County Department of Public Health’s response team member on-call.

Durham County Social Services

The Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) will follow the County’s holiday closing schedule for the Winter Holiday and New Year’s Day. During the holiday closing, residents should report child abuse and neglect or adult abuse and neglect, by calling 911 to reach an on-call social worker.
