Welcome Baby Program Seeks Donations for Annual Coat Drive
Final Push for Donations Needed As Year Comes To Close
DURHAM — Durham County Cooperative Extension’s Welcome Baby Annual Coat Drive gathers coats each year to help keep children warm in Durham. Last year, the program reached record collection numbers and made nearly 400 coats available to children visiting the Welcome Baby Giving Closet. This year, coat collections are down, and the program is calling on the public to help meet this year’s goals.
“To date we have collected 162 coats. Last year this time, we were further along,” said Welcome Baby Program Coordinator Patience M. Mukelabai. “Each year, we want to increase the number of coats we collect; and that is very important as the demand for winter coats continues to grow.”
Donors seeking to participate in the current coat drive are asked to keep in mind that only new or gently used children’s coats in sizes 0 – 7/8 are being collected for the Welcome Baby Annual Coat Drive. All clothes sizes within range are accepted with 4T and 5T being the most highly demanded sizes.
According to Mukelabai, hats, gloves and other winter clothing items are accepted during the Coat Drive and can donated through the Welcome Baby Giving Closet.
Easy to locate collection points for the 2018 Welcome Baby Annual Coat Drive include:
- Durham County South Regional Library, 4505 S Alston Avenue
- Durham County Southwest Regional Library, 3605 Shannon Road
- Durham County North Regional Library, 221 Milton Road
- Welcome Baby, 721 Foster Street
Collection times are based upon the hours of the DCo Library locations which can be found at durhamcountylibrary.org. Items can be dropped off at the Welcome Baby Program location Monday through Friday from 8:30a.m. until 4 p.m.
