Pair Charged & Arrested In Connection With Protest at Durham County Detention Center

Durham, N.C. (Friday, May 10, 2019) – The Durham County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two people in connection with the Thursday, May 9th protest at its Detention Center.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., a crowd of protestors, who had been given permission to gather in the courtyard of the Detention Center, moved to the gated entrance of the Detention Center’s sally port on Pettigrew Street. Soon after, Kayla ONeill Hartsfield, 25, of Chapel Hill Street in Durham and Serena Elysa Sebring Wadlington, 41, of Trinity Avenue in Durham chained themselves to the entrance gate. As a direct result, the Detention Facility was placed on lock-down and Pettigrew Street was closed between Roxboro and Magnum Streets. Throughout the course of the afternoon, both women were repeatedly asked to leave County premises and did not. At approximately 8:00 p.m., the women unlocked themselves and left the area along with remaining protestors.

Warrants were issued overnight, and both women turned themselves in at the Detention Center without incident at approximately 12:30 p.m. today. They were each given a $2,000 unsecured bond and released. Their next court appearance is scheduled for June 12th.

ONeill and Wadlington are charged with one count each of the following:
NC GS 12-288.2 Public Disturbance
NC GS 14-159.13 Second Degree Trespass
NC GS 14- 288.5 Failure to Disperse.

Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead is thankful the incident ended without injury to people or property and said, “The Durham County Sheriff’s Office respects every citizen’s right to free speech provided by the first amendment. While we honor this fundamental constitutional right, in this specific incident laws were broken; leading to charges being filed.”
