Durham County Government is committed to the arts. This year, the County adopted a new Public Art Program focused on advocating arts in Durham.
On Monday, November 4, the Durham County Human Services Building, located at 414 E. Main Street, will become the month-long host location for the Durham Homicide and Victims of Violent Death Memorial Quilt by artist Sidney Brodie. The quilt exhibit will be located on the first floor east-west corridor until Friday, November 29. The exhibit will be closed on the Veterans Day holiday, November 11.
Brodie began needling the quilt in the late 1990’s following the death of a Durham toddler killed on the front porch of her neighbor’s home. Since that time, Brodie has added a patch in honor of every life lost in Durham. As of June 2019, more than 800 squares have been added to the nationally recognized memorial quilt.
In June of 2018, the Public Broadcast Station (PBS) in collaboration with UNC-TV and SCETV, released As in Death, a documentary film spotlighting Brodie’s passionate story and creation of the memorial quilt. The film is a part of the PBS documentary series Reel South directed by Mark Kammel. The film will be shown on various screens across the county throughout the month.
A kick-off event to spotlight the placement of the Durham Homicide and Victims of Violent Death Memorial Quilt Exhibit will take place on Wednesday, November 6, from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m., at the Durham County Human Services Building, Conference Room C. Brodie will make a short presentation, answer questions, and invite attendees to view the quilt. The event is free and open to the public.
