Durham City and County IT Services Affected by Malware Attack
Recovery Process Now Underway; 911 Services Functioning Normally for Residents

DURHAM, N.C. — After receiving notice of a cyber malware attack late on Friday, March 6, the City of Durham and Durham County Government are now in the recovery process.
Fortunately, the City was prepared with notification systems in place that worked as planned, providing immediate notice to City IT staff that enabled a very quick response that minimized damage to operating systems.
The County also received notification late Friday of attacks on their networks, and responded immediately as well.
At this time, City IT staff are bringing systems back online while investigating the source of the attack. Critical public safety systems, including 911 and other public safety agencies, are operational and emergency calls are being handled
The City intentionally shut down its phone system to help contain the attack, so there are phone disruptions to other City facilities and services, such as Durham One Call’s phone line at 919-560-1200, Durham Parks and Recreation centers, City Hall, etc. City IT staff anticipate that the phone system will be operational on Monday, March 9.
The City’s website is fully functional at this time, and residents can use this website to securely pay their water bills, submit Durham One Call service requests, etc. Durham One Call’s mobile app is also fully functional.
The County phone system is operating as normal and the County website is also functional. There is no impact to any of the Durham County Sheriff’s Department 911 services.
City Hall, all non-emergency City operations, programs, and services as well as Durham County Government will be open on Monday, March 9 as normally scheduled.
