Statutory rape charge added for armed robbery suspect

Durham, NC - (April 8, 2020) - On January 3, 2020, Elmer Jose Mejia Guardado was arrested in conjunction with a series of armed robberies of Latino businesses across a three-county area - Durham, Orange, and Wake (the Town of Cary). As a direct result of media coverage of Guardado's arrest, the Durham County Sheriff's Office received a complaint from a resident regarding contact with the complainant's juvenile minor daughter. The girl allegedly met the suspect online where he arranged a meeting during which he engaged in sexual intercourse with her.
On Tuesday, April 7, 2020, as a result of this separate investigation, 22-year-old Guardado was charged with felony statutory rape of a child <= 15 years old. He was given an additional $250,000 bond; bringing his total bond to $1,445,000. He remains in the Durham County Detention Center.
