County to Honor Fallen Heroes During Virtual Memorial Day Event
Remembrance Ceremony to be Broadcast Online and on DTN
Durham, N.C. – Residents and visitors planning to observe Memorial Day 2020 are invited to join Durham County Veteran Services as they commemorate the national day of mourning with a virtual ceremony at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 25, 2020.
The annual remembrance honoring America’s military services members who died while serving their country will be available for viewing on the Durham Television Network (DTN) as well as the County’s Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor and YouTube accounts. The change from the normal in-person event and live ceremony is due to COVID-19 social distancing guidelines intended to keep citizens and staff safe. The ceremony will be rebroadcast on DTN, which is available on Spectrum Channel 8, AT&T U-verse Channel 99, Google Fiber 8 and Frontier Communications Channel 70, at 8 a.m. from May 26 to June 7.
Durham County Veteran Services invites community members to visit and place a flag at the War Memorials in front of the Durham County Administration Building I, located at 200 E. Main St., from 10-11 a.m. on May 25. Flags will be provided by Veteran Services.
The ceremony will begin with opening remarks from Veteran Services staff, followed by the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Then a roll call of Durham County’s 372 known active services members who died while at war will be read. The ceremony will conclude with a playing of “Taps,” played by military at burial and memorial services.
