A Statement from Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead
Today, residents from across the Durham community took their message and demands to the streets once again. This time, their peaceful actions have directly resulted in City of Durham Police Chief Davis and I to agree to participate in a conversation about law enforcement tactics and practices. The summit is scheduled for this Friday, June 5, 2020. Space is limited and, as I understand it, entry will be by invitation only. I look forward to having this constructive dialogue with organizers and others. I feel that the only way we can initiate change is to develop understanding – and that understanding comes from listening.
I continue to be extremely proud of these young men and women, from all races and backgrounds, as they protest peacefully here in Durham. They are standing up against the current climate of racial discrimination in the criminal justice system, in policing and in our country. However, I also realize that they are actually fighting for their future.
Whatever I can do to contribute to that change for a better future for all, I will.
We are One Community, One Durham.
