The Durham County Emergency Medical Services (DCo EMS) is led by Interim EMS Director and Chief Paramedic Kevin Underhill. Kevin began his EMS career in 1988 and has altruistically served Durham County since 1993. 

A native of Johnston County, Kevin joined the Selma Volunteer Rescue Squad in 1988. Since that time he has served as an EMT, EMT-I (AEMT), paramedic, field-trainer, EMS educator, EMS Research Coordinator, Special Programs Coordinator, Quality Assurance Coordinator and Assistant Chief. 

Kevin’s holds an Emergency Medical Services Associates of Applied Science degree from Davidson County Community College. He is a graduate of the Municipal and County Administration Program of the University of North Carolina, School of Government and the EMS Administration and Medical Disaster Management certificate program at the University of North Carolina, School of Medicine. He has also completed the Ambulance Service Manager course, EMS Leadership Academy, and is a Certified Ambulance Compliance Officer (CACO) and Certified Ambulance Privacy Officer (CAPO). 

Kevin worked with a small group of cardiologist from the Duke University Healthcare System to develop and implement the Durham County EMS Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) Hotline. The AMI Hotline significantly improved the outcome of patients diagnosed with AMI. This became the model for RACE (Reperfusion of Acute Myocardial Infarction in Carolina Emergency Departments) and is now used by hospitals and EMS agencies across the United States. Currently serves on regional and national committees to address provider safety and training. 

Kevin is also a member of state and national EMS organizations including the North Carolina Association of EMS Administrators, National EMS Management Association, National Association of EMS Physicians and the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians.
